Rani Mukherjee – A career blended with classics and debacles

Rani Mukherjee is known as one of the finest actresses in Bollywood over the course of last decade. She almost acted with all the major stars of Bollywood right fromAmitabh Bachchan to youngRanbir Kapoor and donned diverse roles as actress and entertainer.
Rani made her debut as child artist in the Bengali movie Biyer Phoolin 1992 where she played the supporting role. And then she took a long break in order to concentrate on studies and made her Bollywood debut as a lead actress in the movie “Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat(1997)” in which she portrayed the role of a rape victim who marries the person who raped her, the movie earned her lot of critical acclaims for her acting but failed commercially and critically as movie.
After the movie’s failure Rani Mukherjee got back to her studies and finished her graduation, she did not want to choose the Bollywood path but seeing the success of her cousin Kajol, she could not resist to get back to the big screen. She then got a rare opportunity to act opposite Aamir Khan in Vikram Bhatt’s ‘Ghulam’ which was a successful venture and especially the song ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ became a chart-buster and made Rani highly noticeable. Before even ‘Ghulam’ was released Rani got an offer from Karan Johar to act in a supporting role in the movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” after Karan saw Rani’s performance in ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baat’. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became a huge hit and got Rani Mukherjee lot of major offers among which only Mehendi(1999) and Hello Brother(1999) were successful and then followed lot of unsuccessful movies like Bichhoo , Badal , Had Kar Di Aapne , Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega.
She then became a bit choosy about films and did a controversial movie ‘Hey Ram’ which is based on Gandhi’s assassination which was India’s official entry to Oscars in the year 2000. The movie also earned her the nomination for best actress film fare, and then she acted in mediocre movies like Abbas Mustan’s ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’, Bas Itna Sa Khawab Hai opposite Abhishek Bachchan, Nayak: The Real Hero with Anil Kapoor which made her a very busy actress but she was never in the top league.
Then came a new page of Rani Mukherjee when she acted in ‘Muje Dosti Karogi’ which was produced by yash Raj Films. Even though movie was a flop in India it worked well overseas and later she did a lot of movies under Yash Raj Films banner. She then got an offer to play lead role in Shaad Ali’s “Saathiya” in 2002 which was a remake of Mani Ratnam’s tamil classic “Alaipuyuthey”, ‘Saathiya’ earned lot of prasies for Rani Mukherjee and won her Film Fare best actress award. Movie was also a commercial success and can be interpreted as Rani Mukherjee’s huge turning point.
After ‘Saathiya’ there was no stopping Rani Mukherjee, she acted in movies likeYuva which won her Film Fare best supporting actress award and then came the blockbuster ‘Hum Tum’ in the year 2005 which earned her numerous accolades and got her into the league of top actresses in Bollywood.
Post ‘Hum Tum’ was the best period of Rani Mukherjee’s career as she acted in lot of successful movies like Veer-Zaara(2004),Bunty Aur Babli(2005) , Khabi Alvida Naa Kehna(2006) which were commercially and critically successful but her best performance till date came in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Black(2005)”in which she acted as a blind and deaf person along with legendary Amitabh Bachchan. Rani Mukherjee was praised by all the critics unanimously and she earned loads of awards for it.
Rani Mukherjee’s aura did not last long as she faced lot of debacles after 2005. She got some decent offers but most of them did not make their mark either commercially or critically. Even though she acted in lot of yash Raj Films like Ta Ra Rum Pum , Laaga Chudari Mein Daag, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Dil Bole hadippa nothing have worked at all and gradually resulted in downfall fall of Rani Mukherjee as a top most actress of Bollywood.
She then started to act in the acting oriented movies like ‘No One Killed Jessica‘ and ‘Talaash‘ which earned her good marks and she also won the Film Fare best supporting actress award for her role In ‘No One Killed Jessica’.
And now she again became very selective about picking movies, as of now she is only acting in ‘Bombay Talkies‘ which is based on a series of short films.
On the occasion of her 35th birthday Bollywood Celebden appreciates the brilliant work that Rani Mukherjee has done for the Bollywood since last 15 years, hope she continues to entertain us for lot more years to come and win lot more awards.
Wish you a very Happy Birthday Rani !
